Temps are currently (8:30 am) around 60F, so a good time to go sweep up in front of our house and the neighboring houses. Philadelphia's "Hidden City" festival starts today, and Shiloh Baptist Church across the street from us is one of the venues. If all kinds of folks, including tour buses (!) are going to be showing up on our street, I'd like it to look good. I have an email list of block residents, so I sent them a hortatory email on Thurs. about keeping the place looking nice because company's coming.

A few notes to myself: )

I peered at the hippeastrum seeds this morning, 10 days after sowing, and realized that many of them were riding higher on the sandy substrate than I had recalled. Curious, I pulled one out and saw that it has a shoot -- which, on its way down to become the first root, had also pushed the seed upwards. So germination is in progress.

My knee continues to have odd slidings and grindings and feelings of not-rightness. Since Saturday my back has also been varying stages of uncomfortable, probably the result of an odd gait to favor the misbehaving knee. My doctor called me back yesterday and says that from my description it does sound as though I've in some way damaged my anterior cruciate ligament. He also said that from my description he thinks I'll be able to manage it without surgery. But he wants to see me. I'm waiting for his appointment person to call me back.

Bleah.

Two peony blossoms are history, another is past its sell-by date, and the third is in full bloom. They didn't last particularly long this year.

and more notes to myself -- read them if you like )

Much better today. Still a little swelling and the occasional twinge. I'm taking stairs with extreme care, especially going down.

The knee thought about locking up when I got on my bike today, but I babied it by not putting any power on the stroke for about half a mile and then cautiously adding it back in, a little power at a time. After that it was fine on the bike.

Here's hoping that tomorrow I'll be able to walk on the level without any kind of weirdness to my gait.

In other news, one peony is fully open and another is about to open. Just in time for Memorial Day. And the wisteria is on the brink of full bloom. Photos will be posted.

It went down to the low 40s (F) last night. I hope my amaryllis come through all right. It would be a shame to have three years' worth of experiments brought to an abrupt halt by one cold night.

Yesterday I got out of bed and almost collapsed because of a searing pain in my right knee. I did manage to hobble to the places I needed to go, but it was very scary. The searing pain abated over the course of the day (and the consumption of many ibuprofen), but this morning it is very stiff and a bit swollen.

The sharp pain is low and on the inside, with another muscular strain thing high and on the outside.

Interestingly, I was able to ride my bike -- about five miles, total, to go to my various errands -- with only minimal discomfort. Then I had to hobble from my bike inside to my meetings. I contemplated the possible surreality of biking here and there and then using a cane to get around on foot.

This is the worst episode of knee misbehavior that I have ever had.
