I peered at the hippeastrum seeds this morning, 10 days after sowing, and realized that many of them were riding higher on the sandy substrate than I had recalled. Curious, I pulled one out and saw that it has a shoot -- which, on its way down to become the first root, had also pushed the seed upwards. So germination is in progress.

My knee continues to have odd slidings and grindings and feelings of not-rightness. Since Saturday my back has also been varying stages of uncomfortable, probably the result of an odd gait to favor the misbehaving knee. My doctor called me back yesterday and says that from my description it does sound as though I've in some way damaged my anterior cruciate ligament. He also said that from my description he thinks I'll be able to manage it without surgery. But he wants to see me. I'm waiting for his appointment person to call me back.

Bleah.

Even if you have to have knee surgery, they can probably do it arthroscopically, which means less recovery time.

When he says that you can "manage it without surgery", you need to find out what that means in terms of quality of life.

(ACL injuries are really common in women; there's something about the architecture of the knee that I forget. Female basketball players are especially prone, probably because they stress the knee so much.)

I'm sorry you're having to go through this.

He knows I bike everywhere, so he knows what kind of quality of life I need. Knee surgery has a $30,000-$40,000 price tag. Out of pocket to me would be at least $6,000, maybe more. If it's not likely to get any worse and exercises may strengthen the surrounding muscles, I'm inclined to try to treat without surgery.

I hope you can avoid surgery too.

It looks like one or two of my hippeastrum seeds are doing the same kind of push-up that yours are. There's also a couple that have a greet shoot visible from the side just above the "soil".

Do you happen to recall on what day you planted yours? Mine are doing pushups but I don't see any green shoots yet.

I planted them on May 13th. I was clever for once and wrote down the date.

Do you lift the cover once in a while and mist?

I don't mist because I think it's moist enough in there already. If the sand changes to a "dry" color (if you get my drift), I'll do something.

You started yours four days ahead of me. I got sidetracked by recent sad events.

Ow. I hope the knee is amenable to management.

One of the blue irises is blooming. The others are thinking things over.

I've got a second iris that is about to bloom. Next year, they should be an amazing patch.
