No trip to Orbisonia, *sigh*

Roy confessed last night: he doesn't really care for the East Broad Top tourist railroad; he has seen one Civil War reenactment and isn't the least bit interested in ever seeing one again; and Orbisonia has no particular charm (without my current obsession it wouldn't be a place I'd think twice about visiting). Spending two days with a reluctant traveler is not my idea of Big Birthday Fun, so I've scuppered the Orbisonia trip, at least as a Big Holiday Destination. Perhaps as a side trip if we have another reason for being in the area some time.
Oh, well. I got a great deal of conceptual glee out of it yesterday. But I'm not terribly sorry that I won't be spending a hot summer weekend out in the baking sun.

Date: 2010-06-17 12:47 pm (UTC)Sidelight - I have visited Orillia, Ontario, Canada, where Gordon Lightfoot was born (believe me, you have very little on me as far as fandom is concerned!) and as you drive into the town there USED to be a sign - "Welcome to Orillia, birthplace of Gordon Lightfoot". They finally gave up replacing that sign.
I also have a coffee mug from the Orillia Opera House, where there is a Gordon Lighfoot auditorium, and I've visited the Lightfoot trail.
So talk your hub into going to Texas, to the Orbison Museum!

Date: 2010-06-17 02:54 pm (UTC)As someone who dabbles in history, I'm interested (just a little bit) in how the son of a shopkeeper and prominent citizen of a central Pennsylvania town wound up in Texas. I'm also wondering, now, whether the town's founder fought at Gettysburg. I think we have the Pennsylvania muster rolls online somewhere so I could probably check that.
