I turned off the air conditioner last night and opened the windows. We didn't get our forecast 56F low, but 62F was good enough. It feels like time to buy marble-covered notebooks and sharpen my Dixon Ticonderoga #2 pencils in preparation for a new school year.

Instead, I puttered around in the back yard a bit. Three days of heavy rain had left me with considerable water in pot saucers, etc. I collected two 2-gallon bucketsful, which I dumped on the plants that never get rained on.

All the amaryllis, the mature ones and the young ones from the 2006 sowing, are inside on a moderatly sunny window. After they get a few weeks to dry out, they'll get to spend some time in the dark and then I'll start the cycle over again in January.

Last winter I reached my coleus overwintering limit, and the plants showed some stress. Of the 24 or so I have, I think I will only overwinter about a dozen, although I reserve the right to change my mind.
