Garden journal
Mar. 29th, 2015 05:44 pmI jotted down a few things I'll want to remember later (maybe).
First of all, my pepper seeds....aren't. I planted them in the same market pack where I put the Ruby Tuesday mystery daylilies (no idea what they are; I found mature seedpods in the planting beds at the Ruby Tuesdays in Winchester VA last July). They didn't seem to be doing anything -- the daylily seeds, that is -- and a market pack is a terrible thing to waste. Apparently being stirred up annoyed them into doing something. I have no pepper seeds, at least not yet, but I have two Ruby Tuesdays.
I do have marjoram, though, and thyme.
I planted the parsley this morning. Good thing, as the seeds were starting to sprout. I was out of small market packs, so I sowed them in a common container. But I was compulsive about it, making six equidistant rows and sowing four evenly spaced seeds in each row. I'd say each seed is about 3/4" from its neighbors. By the time they have leaves, it may be warm enough for me to leave the market packs out back once I've transplanted the parsleys.
The spathes are pulling back on two of the tiniest hippeastrum buds I've ever seen. (That would be the Brave Little Amaryllis from the previous posting.) I'm not inclined to cut the stem quite yet. I'll wait till the buds start to open, and then I'll do it.
My third hippeastrum from the Class of 2006 is opening. I was hoping it would be one of my favorites, either this one:

or this one:

Alas, though, it appears it's not going to be either. More likely it is the one in the front here:

Well, they're all beautiful. Some are just beautifuller than others.
Roy left for Florida this morning and I have spent the day editing Flower Show pictures. I think I may almost make it through March 5 today, leaving only three days remaining (and two of them have very few photos). I will probably knock off after an hour or two, though, and start thinking about a couple grant proposals I'm working on, which will consume me during the month of April. It turns out I may not be retiring at the end of the year, after all -- I've had an enthusiasm transplant. Roy is happy with us staying around in Philadelphia another year or six, especially since we'll have paid off the mortgage!!! by the end of the summer so we can bank that money toward the ultimate retirement.
Outdoor gardening has been delayed. I positively refuse to plant pansies when it's only 45F outside. Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer.
