Been a long time since I posted anything of substance. By now I've mostly forgotten what has happened in the last two weeks. Let's see:

• There was the American Library Association meeting January 26-28, preceded by meetings on digital curation and preservation January 25-26.


• I had jury duty January 28, which was vile, but I never got assigned to a panel, and I was able to get over to the ALA meeting at lunch time, where I snagged free children's books from exhibitors who were packing up


• There was supposed to be a talk on research trends as OCLC (library group), sponsored by PACSCL, on January 24, but the big snow of January 22ish closed our airports and our speaker couldn't fly in from California, so we had to cancel it


• We went to the Philadelphia Museum of Art January 29 to hear one of the Flower Show exhibitors talk about how the upcoming PMA exhibition of Korean art, including this piece, is inspiring his design:
  


• It snowed again, but not so much.


• Our neighbor left for  the Dominican Republic last Friday, and I've been cat-sitting since then.


• I got out on my bike on Saturday for a run to the Big 8, and planned a dawn raid on the ShopRite


• Roy insisted that we rent a car and go to a bunch of supermarkets. It was vile because it was a) the first of the month when all the welfare and Social Security people were stocking up with their new checks; b) the day before a forecast snowstorm, when Philadelphians are morally bound to go out to buy bread and milk; and c) Superbowl Day, so everyone was out buying Doritos and salsa and chicken wings and suchlike.


• The ShopRite was so vile that people were following shoppers out to the parking lot so they could grab shopping carts. I sent Roy over to the Home Depot to buy potting soil and bone meal because I knew he'd have a meltdown in the store.


• We tried to go to TraderJoes but there was a line out the door and halfway up the block; they were restricting store access, probably to prevent shopping cart gridlock


• So instead we went to the Horticultural Center to enjoy some chlorophyll therapy. Then we drove to Bartram's Garden because we could


• It snowed again


• I went to the main Flower Show press event yesterday and saw a whole lot of my friends. Here, enjoy a picture of Vincent Van Goat. This year's theme is ARTiculture, the intersection of art and horticulture.
  


• Now it's raining


• The neighbor's cat is sulking

Have I mentioned the ric rac cactus cuttings? None of them seem to have rooted, but one of them was putting out root-like thingies on the top of the cutting! I took that as a cue and laid it on its side in a shallow bed of vermiculite. Who knows what will happen.

That piece of Korean art is rather stunning.
Vincent Van Goat...please tell me that he's not the mascot of the flower show or something similar.

Sounds like the cactus cutting was sending our aerial roots.

He made an appearance at the Flower Show last year and was a popular photo-op prop. He since showed up in a pop-up garden last summer and was brought it as a prop for the press conference. One of the TV cameramen named him.

I know it's too late now, but if you ever grocery-shop on SS Sunday again, be sure to go *during* the superbowl. The stores will be very, very quiet.
