Hippeastrum

Today, I have five times the number of species hippeastrum bulbs that I had yesterday. Such a mad extravagance! (I used the refund I got from cancelling my subscription to the Philadelphia Inquirer.)

Photos will be posted when everyone has settled in and put out new growth. In the meantime, the grower sent along the admonishment that these guys are likely to drop what's left of their leaves and sulk for awhile. I'm not so sure about that, but I'm prepared. They're all settled nicely into their spanking new pots. (That's new in the sense of nothing ever having been potted in them. I bought the big pot last year and the smaller pots are actually 16 oz Solo cups.)

I can't believe I paid $15 apiece for two yearling bulbs the size of marbles....

Every once in a wile I do a splurge on an order of my beloved pedigreed pelargoniums from England or Belgium. I can never believe I've spent as much as I have on plants.

I spent more on these four bulbs than I've spent on plants -- any and all plants -- in the past ten years. I am the Queen of Cheap when it comes to plants, usually. With me, it's usually seeds or exchanged/scrounged cuttings. I doubt I'll ever do this again. There's too much anxiety attached to these plants.
