Dear Diary: March 30
Mar. 30th, 2012 07:34 amBeen a busy few days since I updated last.
Monday, I was invited by my Flower Show friend and exhibitor Michael Bruce to participate in and especially to photograph the after-hours installation of his Bouquet of the Day for the Macy's Flower Show. Throw me in that briar patch. It involved meeting up with him by sitting on the steps of the church across the street from Macy's at 9:00 p.m. drinking coffee and waiting for his van to show up. We had a one-night cold snap so I was wearing a puffy parka and had a ratty bag with my camera etc. I was mistaken for a newbie homeless person by several homeless folks, which delighted me. We arranged flowers till 11:30; I got home after midnight and it took me until about 2:00 a.m. to come down from the high. I've been trying to catch up with sleep ever since.

Michael's arrangement, with Michael for scale
Ooops, this is from the BACK!

Michael's arrangement, from the FRONT!
Tuesday, I had a really comical bike accident and drew poor Roy into it. We were pulling out of the parking lot of the Big 8 supermarket into a narrow street. Roy swears that the guy in the beemer a decent distance away made eye contact with him and then accelerated. I had to do a swerving stop to keep from being hit; because I only had groceries on the left side of the bike my balance was off; I went down and took Roy down with me. I had what I thought was a long gash on my thigh but when I had time to get home and get a good look at it I realized it was only a scrape. Now I have said scrape surrounded by a big bruise but no hematoma knot and I can even roll over on that side to sleep. (Good thing, too, because that's my non-snoring side -- if I have to sleep on my other side I snore and Roy gets cranky.)
Wednesday and yesterday I was involved in the annual regional National History Day competition. It has grown since we re-started it in 2005 and now involves more than 1,000 students from 21 schools. We'd love to see it grow still further but we're stetching the capacity of both our volunteers and our host, the National Constitution Center. I didn't feel like judging this year so I did general dogsbody work, which this year included photographing exhibits and shepherding a delegation of 25 foreign teachers on a State Department-sponsored junket.
So today I will try to catch up on neglected work. On the windowsills all hippeastrum pods seem to be progressing nicely, especially the 'papilio' x 'emerald,' now about 35 days old and looking very good:

Tomorrow is the season reopening of Shofuso, our Japanese teahouse in Fairmount Park. It's a big deal this year because they've scored two huge brick outhouses left over from the Centennial in 1876 and have repurposed them as education and event space. Although there's not a cherry tree in sight, they've christened the outhouses and the space between them the Shofuso Sakura Pavilion. I imagine cherries will be planted. There's a nice collection of cut-leafed maples on one side and a bank of peonies just across the drive, though.

I just realized that we acted out the corniest sight gag in at least two Mel Brooks movies.
