Been a busy few days since I updated last.

Monday, I was invited by my Flower Show friend and exhibitor Michael Bruce to participate in and especially to photograph the after-hours installation of his Bouquet of the Day for the Macy's Flower Show. Throw me in that briar patch. It involved meeting up with him by sitting on the steps of the church across the street from Macy's at 9:00 p.m. drinking coffee and waiting for his van to show up. We had a one-night cold snap so I was wearing a puffy parka and had a ratty bag with my camera etc. I was mistaken for a newbie homeless person by several homeless folks, which delighted me. We arranged flowers till 11:30; I got home after midnight and it took me until about 2:00 a.m. to come down from the high. I've been trying to catch up with sleep ever since.

Ooops, this is from the BACK!

Michael's arrangement, from the FRONT!

Tuesday, I had a really comical bike accident and drew poor Roy into it. We were pulling out of the parking lot of the Big 8 supermarket into a narrow street. Roy swears that the guy in the beemer a decent distance away made eye contact with him and then accelerated. I had to do a swerving stop to keep from being hit; because I only had groceries on the left side of the bike my balance was off; I went down and took Roy down with me. I had what I thought was a long gash on my thigh but when I had time to get home and get a good look at it I realized it was only a scrape. Now I have said scrape surrounded by a big bruise but no hematoma knot and I can even roll over on that side to sleep. (Good thing, too, because that's my non-snoring side -- if I have to sleep on my other side I snore and Roy gets cranky.)

Wednesday and yesterday I was involved in the annual regional National History Day competition. It has grown since we re-started it in 2005 and now involves more than 1,000 students from 21 schools. We'd love to see it grow still further but we're stetching the capacity of both our volunteers and our host, the National Constitution Center. I didn't feel like judging this year so I did general dogsbody work, which this year included photographing exhibits and shepherding a delegation of 25 foreign teachers on a State Department-sponsored junket.

So today I will try to catch up on neglected work. On the windowsills all hippeastrum pods seem to be progressing nicely, especially the 'papilio' x 'emerald,' now about 35 days old and looking very good:

Tomorrow is the season reopening of Shofuso, our Japanese teahouse in Fairmount Park. It's a big deal this year because they've scored two huge brick outhouses left over from the Centennial in 1876 and have repurposed them as education and event space. Although there's not a cherry tree in sight, they've christened the outhouses and the space between them the Shofuso Sakura Pavilion. I imagine cherries will be planted. There's a nice collection of cut-leafed maples on one side and a bank of peonies just across the drive, though.

That bike accident sounds scary, not comical.
I'm glad the damage isn't worse.

That's QUITE a floral arrangement in the photo!

Believe me, the accident was funny. I couldn't get up for five minutes because I was paralyzed with laughter. Roy and I went down in slooooooow motion and for a bit there it appeared he was going to be able to save me.

And oopsie, the photo of Michael's arrangement I posted is from the back of the arrangement. The front is even more QUITE! I posted a second photo in the post.

Indeed. I feel privileged to have placed a couple stems of dendrobium in the arrangement, plus a stray fatsia leaf or six.

That flower arrangement is clearly going to start walking away any moment, like a Huorn.

I'm glad the bike accident wasn't worse. I guess the domino effect would indeed have been funny, but argh.

I just said everything I wanted to say about that to [livejournal.com profile] pondhopper, but the bottom line is -- the accident was really funny, and I posted a picture of the back of Michael's arrangement, which I've corrected in the post by adding one of the front.

"The domino effect"

*guffaw*

I just realized that we acted out the corniest sight gag in at least two Mel Brooks movies.

Yes, that is exactly what I was thinking of, though until you commented above I didn't realize just how slow-motion the event had been. Anything you can't get up from for five minutes because you are laughing has to be pretty funny.

It might have only been two minutes, but I know the hovering pedestrian / good Samaritans were getting antsy. I've gotten a bruise of truly epic proportions out of it, but no bump, just a huge dying rainbow.
