I've been sitting here taking pictures of my beautiful papilio as it opens today. This species never opens to a flat-faced flower but maintains a trumpet shape. One blossom is almost fully deployed, and the other is about half open. More photos from yesterday and today, showing the progress, after the jump, but here's one to cheer our wintry souls right this very minute.

Some clones of this species are self-fertile; others are self-sterile. They apparently all breed happily with the exotic 'cybister' hybrids, so I'm looking forward to being on the receiving end of some 'Evergreen' cybister pollen as soon as my friend from Indianapolis can drop it in the mail (that would be tomorrow). I'll self-fertilize one flower and put 'Evergreen' pollen on the other. I should get something!

And here's a photo of Evergreen, from another Flickr user:

Aren't they? And they're immune to the awful Hippeastrum virus that all my other plants have, with the possible exception of some very new seedlings.

I have never seen any like that! Gorgeous! The green one looks like a green lily.

I've seen the green cybister at the Philadelphia Flower Show, and the Hippeastrums are were for a long time considered to be part of the Liliaceae, so they're allowed to look lily-ish.

I'm awfully fond of Hippeastrums. Here's a link to my photos on Flickr:

Thanks for the link. You have some lovely photos there. I know next to nothing about amaryllis (the name I've always called them)...
I am a Pelargonium collector but you've inspired me to try a Hippeastrum or two one of these days.

Wow - it's really clear where the 'astrum' part comes from, isn't it? They're beautiful.
