Garden journal: Parsley, hippeastrum

Note to self. I soaked parsley seeds the night before last and planted them in a flat yesterday.

I now have 100% budding on all adult hippeastrum bulbs and offsets. That would be two 'Apple Blossom,' three Trader Joe NOIDs, one 'Gervase,' two 'Exotica' and one 'Papilio.' I see one bud in the class of 2006 keepers and two in the class of 2006 discards. This is the year I will choose three from that class and discard the rest. They're probably all infected with mosaic virus and thus aren't okay for gifting to anyone, although I'm beginning to think that the virus is a bit like HIV in that with proper care they can live long happy lives.

I will have a balcony in my new apartment. I hope to have a window box and maybe grow some stuff. And I like your analogy here.

How big is the balcony? Approximately, that is -- I'm sure you don't have measurements on it yet.

I'm not sure. Jan told me her mom grew catnip in a window ox on her balcony (same complex). I'm thinking patio tomatoes and stuff.

'Scuze the ignorant question, but do you soak all seeds prior to planting?

The only thing I grow these days is cat grass, and it comes up fine, but is soaking recommended?

No -- there are a very few seeds that benefit from a pre-soak, one of them being parsley. Cat grass just gets plunked in a pot and watered. I have two pots of the stuff going right now so that one can rest while the other is getting sheared.
