2010-04-12_01irisLooking at the way these common blue flag iris are packed into the whiskey barrel in front of our house, I am guesstimating that even after thinning and planting some of the overflow out back I'm likely to have several fans left.

Would anybody like any of the Community Garden Rescue Iris? As I said, they're nothing special. But they're cheerful, they're sturdy, they tolerate incredible abuse, and they will multiply like guppies. I know that several folks on my f-list already have these, and I think they're doing okay as far north as Minneapolis.

I probably won't thin them until late May or early June, which is earlier than I should but the barrel is rotting right before my eyes.

The irises that you sent me are indeed doing well, despite the upstairs neighbors' dog deciding that iris-land was the perfectest place to try and dig to China. Doggie dug last fall, and still they came up this year. I was able to move them to the front yard a few weeks ago (yay early spring!) where Doggie won't get them, and they are thriving. I don't know if there will be blooms this year, but it is only the middle of April after all.

Have you promised them all yet? I'm trying to get hold of my landlord to see if he'll let me plant some here.

My landlord is giving me a big "OK" so I'd love to have some of the bulbs if they're still available. Let me know how much the shipping is and I'll reimburse.

Email to chakolate47 AT gmail DOT com if that's easier.

Shipping will be minimal, but these aren't bulbs -- they're rhizomes. I have about a half dozen takers locally and will put you at the end of the list, if that's okay. I'll have a better idea of how many fans (leaves plus rhizome) I have when I actually get into dividing them up.

I'm happy to be at the end of the list. I'm an adequate gardener at best, so the better (and closer) gardeners should get preference.
