2010-03-28_05backyardAfter busting up more of the concrete in our back yard, Roy turned his attention to the walkway from Anderson House to the Christian Street house. When we broke up the concrete initially, he built this makeshift boardwalk out of scrap lumber and a shipping pallet. Then inertia set in. (And it didn't look that bad with all those hostas around it.) Yesterday he disinstalled and broke up the rotting pallet and the rest of the contraption and pulled out the concrete rubble hidden beneath it. We had some rather pedestrian pavers but no sand to make a proper bed for them.

We did, however, have a few bags of coal clinkers that had been used as the substrate when the concrete was originally poured, and these went in, covered with a little of what laughingly passes for topsoil in this back yard. (After I took this photo Roy put in the clinkers and the pavers and eventually I'll post all the pictures.)

The little arrangement of four brick fragments in the foreground marks the spot where I had planted a hosta last year -- it is one of three that thrived last year until The Scamp chose that spot for his winter litter box. Now it's the only one left on that side. Once Roy is through playing pavers I will move it.

In other gardening news, yesterday I planted some french thyme seeds in a milk jug construction like the one that [livejournal.com profile] joeyplanting is using for winter sowing -- but mine are on a windowsill. The seed packet says we should have germination in 14-21 days, which would put it at April 12-19, I think.

In other non-gardening news, I discovered that my left eye is itchy this morning. Also it's oozing small quantities of stuff that looks suspiciously like mucus. Also the corner is red and swollen. I will give it half a day to see if perhaps it's just something mechanical, and then I'll call the ophthalmologist. Eeeuw, pink eye? I haven't had that for almost thirty years!

There's an old folk remedy for eye irritation: a whole flax seed put under the lid before bed. My dad swears by it, although I've never tried it.

The redness and swelling in the corner thingie (tear gland?) are abating, although not entirely gone. This is the eye that gets the eyedrops, so it may be a transient irritation from them, or something mechanical, or some piddling infection that is on the way to resolving on its own. I think I'll gamble on saving a couple hundred bucks by using watchful waiting.
