Does anyone think it's a good idea to let folks set fire to bombs in aircraft as they approach Detroit? Or anywhere else?

After our government failed us on this one, ordinary passengers disabled the little creep. So how come we're paying vast sums of money to a federal government that can't keep violent Islamist nutballs off our aircraft?

I'm not sure I see how the federal government failed on this one. By not discovering the guy's intent before he boarded the aircraft? Even the best screening process can't read somebody's mind, and there are otherwise innocuous items that, when combined, can cause a fire. The only way to be 100 percent sure nutballs of any stripe don't get on our aircraft is to keep *everybody* off the planes - or strip down all the passengers and make them fly naked.

Pat, he was on one "watch this guy" list but not another. I don't ask much of my government -- in fact, I ask much less of it than it wants to give me. But I do ask that it keep murderous nutballs out of the country.

Or if they're not able to do that, then at least stop using tax money to fund giant agencies that do very little, and stop making everyone who flies go through a useless song-and-dance to get on a plane.

Harumph. Okay, now I feel like I'm shouting 'Get off my lawn' at somebody. I don't want to be the neighborhood grump, but it gets harder and harder not to be every passing news story.

Agreed the mindlessly egalitarian screenings are just plain stupid.
But, as I mentioned in my last reply to Pat, this guy's *father* reported him to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria six months ago. What is wrong with these people, who are being paid good money to protect us?

EDIT: My mistake, the report is variously "several weeks ago" and "three months ago."

According to recent reports, the perp's father, a high ranking Nigerian banking official, contacted the U.S. Embassy about his son's extremist views six months ago. I believe that would have been June?

Not sure my most recent reply made it as a reply to this. The federal government, in the person of the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, was informed of this guy's tendencies. By his father. Six months ago. EDIT: My mistake -- three months ago.

Yeah, I see that in the news now. You're right, a massive screw-up by somebody, somewhere.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is seeming less like a spoof and more like a training manual now. (I got the deluxe collector's edition for Christmas.)

Sorry, that should have been 'not to be *with* every passing news story.'

Not going yet -- we love our city and our house, and inertia of rest has a certain charm as well. But we keep checking out little things. Like the fact that Enterprise and National both have rental car places just outside of town (on the Loop). Hertz, alas, does not.
