We don't need no stinkin' swatch! This little proof-of-concept piece made with scrap yarn suggests that the ribbing piece should be longer, the pointy bits should be longer, and I should include another pattern repeat (or use thicker yarn/larger needles. With those modifications, it should cover all knuckes and a fair bit of the first joint of the fingers while allowing range of movement . I have some more scrap sport-weight yarn around here -- I think I'll try it again!

I don't know why it never occurred to me to do this - it's a great idea. Of course, for me it won't be anything fancy like knitting them, I'll just cut off some (what else?) tube socks.

I thought about socks but was afraid they would ravel if I cut them off. I got this pattern here:

I found that my learning curve was one repeat of the pattern and after that it became easier. My hands are broader than most women's hands, though. I take a Size 9 glove and they're still tight across the back of the hand, although my fingers don't fill the glove fingers down to the tips. So I wasn't surprised when it was a little narrow. I may knit up the other one and give them to my niece, who's a tiny thing like her mother.

I thought I'd just cut five slits in the end of the sock, and see how that works out at first.
