Date: 2009-05-16 04:55 pm (UTC)For much of the 20th century, Leftist influences promoted a wrong-headed view of economic development according to which free enterprise was seen negatively and government activity was seen as an unmitigated good.
Find me anyone - any living human being - who sees government activity as an unmitigated good. Find me anyone who doesn't complain about the actions of government.
It's a very strong statement, and not at all ambiguous. But it's blatantly wrong, and intended as an ugly attack. And yet, it's "Leftists" who are dishonest and speak hatefully. See, that's what bugs me.
If you can't recognize the essential humanity of your opponent, but claim that they are the ones who are blind, there's something seriously wrong.

Date: 2009-05-16 06:31 pm (UTC)I think the strong statement happens to be accurate. But I've railed against the mindset that says that if I oppose a government program to promote some social good then I must be against that social good. The notion that only the government can be trusted to do good is so ingrained in some folks that they can't even see it operating in their mind sets. And I'd argue that there are a lot of politicians who are banking on that.
Totally unrelated: I just interrupted typing this to answer my eighth robocall in support of this, that, or the other primary candidate so far today, and it's only 2:30. Being a registered Democrat here is a drag. I'm switching my registration back to Republican. They've essentially written off Philadelphia, so they won't bother me.
