Jan. 6th, 2012 09:58 amMy original Schlumbergera, a white one that I inherited when I moved into Roy's late first wife's house in 1985, is blooming ecstatically downstairs now. Actually, it's more of a pale pink than a white, but all my Schlumbergera trend to pink because we keep the temperature in the 60s. I've had Schlumbergera of one variety or another in bloom for a month now.
There will surely be a hiatus between Schlumbergera and Hippeastrum this year, though -- I have a few shoots but bloom is weeks away and I can't expect the stray Schlumbergera to hang on that long. There will be no Nopalxochia to bridge the gap this year, thanks to last year's extreme haircut. They don't bloom on first-year growth. I suppose I could bring up an overwintering begonia from the basement, but why bother?
It was down to 14F the other night (that would be -10C for you Europeans). Today it's supposed to go up to the mid 50s F / 13-15C. I can ride bikes to my meeting and on my errands, whee. And the sun is shining.
Tomorrow we plan to go to New York City to see an exhibition of Vivian Maier's work.
