Dear Diary: October 12
Oct. 12th, 2011 07:36 amThe weather has shifted. The temperature is dropping rapidly and the rains are to be with us all day and possibly the next few days. I imagine that will exacerbate the odor problems at the Occupy Philadelphia site, which was already redolent of patchouli and stale urine. (The Occupiers are sharing space with the homeless.) I walked through on Monday. Possibly the protests themselves are mainstream, but the signage at OP was definitely radical leftist, as befits a local movement born at an anarchist bookstore.
My knees are hurting a bit, something that tends to happen when the weather shifts. Or perhaps I'm allergic to craft beer. I went to meet a colleague for dinner last night and had a flight of four artisan beers. It was kind of funny, actually -- I biked six miles into an unfamiliar neighborhood to meet the colleague at a gastropub owned by....my next door neighbors. The food was pretty good.
Today I will trundle off in the rain to visit my sister and her family. I'm taking the Benjamin Bagby Beowulf and the Mummer documentary in case the conversation flags. I'll pick up a couple of nice pears at the Reading Terminal Market for my sister, too.
The days are closing in and it's getting harder to get myself on my bike. But at least I'll get in some walking today. I may treat myself to a new golf umbrella -- someone took mine from the umbrella stand at the Union League.
The shawl for my sister is now more than four feet long. I'm feeling pretty confident about finishing it before she switches from palliative care to hospice.
