Valentine's Day
Feb. 14th, 2010 09:06 amNot my holiday -- it has always looked to me like a thing, like Mother's Day and a couple others, devised by Hallmark, Hershey and the floral lobby. Roy and I handed each other imaginary valentines yesterday and that's that. He'll be accompanying me to the Asian market today to help me carry home the week's load of tofu, [something] choi, and cheap eggs -- that's evidence enough of devotion. Since Chinese New Year was yesterday, I think, I am expecting interesting festive foods near the checkout counter.
I woke up at 6:00 when the alarm went off, but only because Roy prodded me -- I'm too used to sleeping through his alarm. I'll have to find an evil talk-radio station to blast me into consciousness. Nevertheless, I was up and out of bed by 6:03. This bodes well for my Flower Show training program.
I'm not entirely between floral displays here after all -- the last Schlumbergera, the one that blooms later than all the rest -- is in full bloom in the 2nd floor bathroom sink. If we ever dig up the floor and replace those pipes I think I'll still use that sink as a planter. The leaves from the potted tulips I bought at the Pathmark a couple weeks ago are turning yellow. Not enough sun on the windowsill, I guess, so I'll move them to Anderson House, which never freezes any more because the houses on either side are occupied and heated.
The new hippeastrum 'Gervase' has been showing signs of life with maddening slowness. The first leaf stalk is less than 1" high. But I see the nubbin of a flower stalk also pushing up, so perhaps it will do everything all at once. 'Exotica' is looking good. The bud count on the Nopalxochia is now up to eight confirmed and another five maybe. A good year for sure.
(EDIT/UPDATE: Did the walk / grocery run, standing/walking for two hours again.)
