This past spring I went to a favorite nursery near Roy Jr's house to pick up replacement herbs -- I didn't bother to take cuttings from my sage last year and the winter was unusually hard, and I missed the window for starting new thyme, oregano, and basil.

While I was there, this bright red New Guinea impatiens kept winking at me. It clearly wanted to be adopted, and probably knew that it had as much of a chance of eternal life at my house as anywhere it was likely to go, so it was saying "pleasepleaseplease, pick me, pick me!" So I did. I should take a new picture of an open bloom that doesn't have any blemishes, but I don't have one right now.

Anyhow, I'm trying to root a cutting, which I've read is difficult but not impossible. My first two attempts weren't successful. This time I'm using a mix of my own devising -- 50% Organic Mechanics potting medium and 50% vermiculite. It's early days yet, but the leaves aren't wilting and it's weakly resisting the gentlest of tugs.

You can see the plant itself on the lower left of this photo, which I posted yesterday. I think it's too tender a plant to winter over in the unheated back house, but I'll give it a shot. Nothing ventured, etc.
