Easter Flowers
Mar. 31st, 2013 02:38 pmWe only got to church 15 minutes early, so the place was already packed, and we wound up in the front pew. Not that I minded. I wore a hat, and I believe I was one of six hat-wearing women out of 300 women in the church. (There were 600 people at Easter services, a far cry from the 30-40 who went to the Maundy Thursday service.)
When I walked in, I did a double-take. I thought I'd wandered into the Flower Show by mistake, or that perhaps there had been a really really extravagant wedding there the day before. Huge floral wreaths on the glass doors. Big urns of flowers before you started the walk down the aisle, and swirly two-tier affairs, topped with candles in chimneys on every fourth pew. Flowers on the communion rail. Two huge urns of flowers flanking the altar. Flowers all over the pulpit!
And all of them done by members of the congregation under the direction of the rector's wife -- who, if she isn't a trained professional, ought to be. In conversation after church, she mentioned knowing Michael Bruce.
Note to self, I must learn how to use the camera on my cell phone. Too late I learned that if I force flash it also forces focus. Here's a blurry shot of the general splendor of the church:
