Papilio x emerald
Apr. 29th, 2012 10:32 amThursday (4/26) I floated 20 H. 'papilio' x 'emerald' seeds in a glass of water; I changed the water yesterday. This morning, when I was watering my plants, I checked under the papilio pot and found one seed that had been soaking in the runoff. I added it to the glass of water. Later I eyeballed my soaking seeds and noticed that one is sprouting. I wonder if it's the one that had been under the plant. Now I'm sorry I didn't keep it separate.
I took the remaining 20 seeds and potted them up. I used Miracle-Gro seed starting mixture topped with 1/4" of clean builders sand. I misted the seeds, which I've stood upright in the sand as I've done before, and tented the pot with a plastic bag.
Eight or ten seedlings, if they're strong ones, would be plenty.
The 'apple blossom' x 'gervase' were duds -- no embryos at all when the seeds dried, just flimsy husks.
'Trader Joe' looks absolutely awful. I think I'll feed the bulbs but keep them indoors this summer, and then heat treat the heck out of them this fall. Can't have them menacing my new babies.
In other news...I went down cellar yesterday to check on my seedlings under the grow lights and noticed a puddle next to the water heater. And a small puddle ON the water heater. Uh-oh. We've turned it off and the plumber is coming early tomorrow morning. We plan to turn it on tonight, maybe, so we can take showers. Otherwise, we're boiling water for washing etc.
