Dec. 27th, 2011

Seasonal chores continue in and around work.

I trimmed the spent foliage and picked wisteria leaves out of the remaining Hippeastrum planters. The last of the big bulbs (Trader Joe stripey NOID and its two babies, plus two $1 Apple Blossom) have come in. I am saving the real chore, the dividing of the Class of 2006, for this weekend. I believe I have twelve keepers out of the 24-30 bulbs in total. It's possible they all have Hippeastrum mosaic virus, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pitch the keepers until I've seen how they perform this next season. And I'm keeping the Class of 2011 well segregated.

I looked at two patterns for the 2012 snowflake. One is pretty elaborate; the other less so. I made one of the elaborate ones and found that, although it was time-consuming, the pattern felt right in my hands. I think it will be worth the extra 30 minutes it will take to produce each snowflake. (It may take less time as I get the hang of it a little more.) The sample has been starched and blocked and is drying now. The blocking is more elaborate, requiring 26 pins as opposed to the usual 7-13. So block-as-you-make-them will be called for.

Tonight will be the Stripping of the Turkey Carcass and the Boiling of the Bones. Also the shredding of the stuffing bread. Tomorrow I'll make the mac and cheese, the cranberry sauce, and the green bean casserole, and I'll also set the table (late in the day). That should make Thursday's turkey roasting and hostessing pretty easy.

It's raining this evening and warmish, therefore damp. It would be a bad day to make springerle even if I were so inclined. Which I'm not.

Roy went to the Union League to work out and afterwards he stepped on the scale and saw a number that made him grumpy. We have agreed that the minute we've fed the Family we will do a ritual stripping of the larder. Cookies that don't go home with the Family may fatten up the squirrel and the sparrows. I don't feel like sitting out in the cold to watch the Mummers this year. There's no law that says I can't take a year off; I've done it before. If we don't go to the Union League to watch the Mummers we will be spared some other temptation. We can always walk down to Broad Street and catch a glimpse, and then check them all out on YouTube later.
