While exercising at the Fitness Center Tuesday afternoon, Roy slipped off one of those balance balls and landed on his kiester -- right side, same place more or less that he hit when he fell in Montreal the previous week. He went on about his business, going to meetings and walking quite a bit, although he commented that he felt as though he'd been sitting on a wadded-up handkerchief.

But by the time he got home Tuesday night he was quite uncomfortable. His right cheek was swollen and hard to the touch, also a little warm. I made him an ice pack and a nice bourbon on the rocks, which he used to wash down the ibuprofen I also handed him. (Yeah, yeah, ibuprofen plus alcohol...he's still alive...)

An hour with the ice and additional ibuprofen a few hours later and he was able to sleep fairly well with the aid of a heating pad.

Yesterday, Wednesday, he had no trouble getting out of bed and fetched the coffee from upstairs. He followed his usual routines and commented at lunch that he thought he was on the mend, except for the swelling and hardness.

Wednesday afternoon he was glued to his office chair working on a tricky bit of writing. He stood up and cried out in pain, and continued to cry out as he worked his unhappy way to the first floor. I was all set to dial 9-1-1 and have the ambulance take him, but he fussed, so we agreed that if 45 minutes of ice, bourbon, and ibuprofen didn't help him we'd do it. Close questioning revealed that he'd not taken any ibuprofen all day, grrrr.

So ice (actually a big bag of frozen green beans), ibuprofen, and bourbon were duly administered and indeed he felt better 45 minutes later, enough so that he was able to go upstairs and lounge in his recliner chair while we watched Lark Rise to Candleford.

Heat and ibuprofen helped him sleep most of the night. Today he has almost-full range of motion, although putting on his socks is still a trial. He promises me that while I'm off at a meeting he will get out of his chair regularly and also take his ibuprofen regularly. Indeed, he reports that he has cleared all the debris from a bookcase in his office that can double as a standing desk.

He has also made a call to his health care provider, seeking an appointment. Neither of us has ever seen swelling like this and we are a wee bit nervous.

Full moon

Actually it's waxing gibbous. The sky is clear and the light is incredible.

My sister went out on a full moon -- she left just as it tipped over to waning gibbous. The sky was also clear then.

So it's been almost one full lunar cycle that she's been gone.
