Also....Roy bought a new camera yesterday
Nov. 6th, 2011 09:24 amRoy has been dissatisfied with his eight year old point-and-shoot for some time, and has also concluded that the retro charms of his Leica and wet chemistry pale before the instant gratification of digital.
We'd been mulling getting something in the pocket camera size but closer to a dSLR in features -- I love my D90 but it's like hauling around a brick, so Roy didn't especially want to borrow it as a road camera. There's a business angle to this -- he's often expected to provide photos along with text when he writes for Trains and Railway Age. Thus do we gratify our indulgences Chez Blanchard.
There is a wonderful camera store in town called WebbCam and we had the undivided attention of John Webb for close to an hour as Roy settled on a camera that was only twice the cost of the one(s) we had planned to look at. But it's a great little camera and should keep him happy for many years to come -- the new Nikon V1. I confess to having a wee bit of camera envy myself. It's so light -- a very feather around the neck compared to mine. On the other hand, it feels way too small when I pick it up to shoot with it.
I told Roy "Merry Christmas" and he could expect a pair of sweatpants under the tree but that would be it for both of us.
EDITED TO ADD: And John Webb casually cleaned the sensor on my D90 while talking with Roy about the features of the V1. Apparently he's also buds with Steve McCurry -- there's an inscribed poster of The Afghan Girl on his wall.
