Dear Diary: June 29
Jun. 29th, 2011 08:57 pmAll Civil War all the time starts tomorrow and runs for five consecutive ten-hour days. At the end I will feel like a blob of Jello but must immediately work my tail off to be ready to leave for Virginia on Saturday. This will be three consecutive disrupted weekends and I will be totally disoriented by the time it's over.
Happy news on the health front: Today's blood pressure reading was 127/73, pulse 68. Is it weight loss? Other dietary changes? Exercise? Less alcohol and caffeine? All of the above? In any case, I don't see any BP meds in my future now. Whee.
Here is a picture of my only vegetable. I had planted six, but the squirrels dug up the other ones.

Despite the squirrels, it appears that I will have basil. Also rosemary, sage, chives, and marjoram.
Speaking of marjoram, I'm experimenting with preserving it without drying. I harvested while the plants were in bud (with a few blooms) and meticulously hand-picked all the little orbs of bloomingness and all the wee leaves. Then I stuffed all into ice cube trays, covered with olive oil, and put in the freezer. Some hours later I popped out the cubes and put them in a freezer container. We'll see how it works, and whether I get a second crop from my two plants. I sure love my fresh marjoram.
I am barely recovered from the Wanamaker Organ Centennial bash, but while I was away the hippeastrum sprouted with gay abandon and it appears I'll have upwards of 60 of the Trader Joe / Gervase cross. So far only two of the Papilio x Chico have visible sprouts, but others give subtler evidence of rooting. In other words, I pull on the seeds and they don't come up. I applied the third consecutive Wednesday Drench of Bacillus thuringensis and I don't think I have any more fungus gnats. I have no idea where all these seedlings will go.
