I just ordered a canner....
Aug. 20th, 2010 11:15 amI have jars, lids, rings...tongs, funnel. All I'm missing is the canner. I think I have a line on cheap bushels of tomatoes. It came to me in a flash that if I match the price of el cheapo canned tomatoes I'm ahead because I can have salt-free canned tomatoes, which are *not* el cheapo.
A friend of mine had already placed her bulk order for tomatoes at $11/bushel, which seems like a reasonable price to me, and is seeing if she can add a bushelful for me. If not, there's the farmer's market this afternoon and I can talk with Mr. Beiler about his price.
Oh, and peaches. We've used up almost all the Hastings' Revenge by adding it to our yogurt etc. I found my case of SureJell. Mmmmmm....peach preserves.
When I was much younger, I used to pick blackberries out back behind my ex-mother-in-law's place. Mmmmmm. Blackberry jam, practically free.
