Watch thou for the Mutant!
Mar. 23rd, 2010 11:29 amWhen I saw this, I was immediately reminded of John Wyndham's novel The Chrysalids, published in the U.S. as Re-Birth. In this postapocalyptic setting, even minor variations from the True Image were regarded as Deviations and plants and animals destroyed. Religious families had framed plaques saying "Watch thou for the Mutant!" on their kitchen walls.
Plants were burned, animals slaughtered, humans (called Blasphemies) sterilized and driven into the wilderness. It's a very compelling book, as a group of children discover their telepathic abilities and begin to realize that they, too, are Blasphemies. The lyrics from the Jefferson Airplane song, "Crown of Creation," are taken from this book.
Well, they're not getting my mutant Hippeastrum 'gervase', with its solitary red tepal. I don't imagine it would get me any points at the Flower Show, though. The other three flowers are fine -- I hope the second stalk has four normal flowers.
