I had to run a gantlet of Doctors Without Borders collectors on Broad Street this morning, all of them young, all of them startled when I told them I'd already made my contribution to the Salvation Army, but all of them apparently pleased that I'd donated at all.

(Every time I hear "Doctors Without Borders," though, I'm reminded of a Flanders & Swann routine about Shakespeare wherein they refer to another hit play, "Doxies without Smocksies.")

Last night we decided to flop down and watch an episode of the 1996 version of Pride & Prejudice. Midway through tape 1, it froze on Colin Firth's face, displayed a whole lot of tracking noise on the screen, and refused to budge another inch.

How times have changed! The set of videos that cost us something like $100 in the late 90s can now be replaced with DVDs for $16 from Amazon, with free shipping if you have Amazon Prime, which we do. So we did.

(An etymological digression -- authorities vary on whether one runs the gantlet or runs the gauntlet, but the AP stylebook is clear, according to something I googled. One runs the gantlet and throws down the gauntlet.)
