090926_02freelibraryOne thing I really like about Facebook is the ease of posting links -- dump the link in a little box and it pulls a headline, some teaser copy, and an illustration. That's nice.

LiveJournal doesn't, but I can still post that I spent yesterday at an all-day symposium on Fraktur, an art form brought here by the Pennsylvania German immigrants and practiced in Pennsylvania and other sites of the German diaspora. The link leads to the online database of Fraktur from the Free Library of Philadelphia -- the symposium was organized to celebrate the completion of the initial phase of the project.

We had lunch in the Skyline Room, which was once the rather dismal cafeteria on the fourth floor. That's been closed for years, but the room opens onto a terrace with, yes, great views of the skyline. The terrace was locked, but I was able to see that they've greened some chunks of the roof. Go library!

more if you want it )

And now, to do a little web maintenance on Roy's site. What are you all doing this weekend?

When it was over I came back to my office and noticed a few breaks in the cloud cover to the west. By the time I got on my bike and pedaled away the sky was blue.

I only rode five miles, not much at all, but with my back having been touchy I didn't want to push. It felt not-nice when I got out of the saddle to push, but I tried it a few times and the not-nice (a stiffness acting as though it might be a cramp) subsided. Go me.

There are many vegetables in the fridge. Since this weekend is an Autumn Festival in the Asian community I am avoiding that supermarket.

I just found out that SOSNA and Shiloh Baptist Church are partnering on an application to have a farmer's market out on the sidewalk right across the street from me. Who needs a backyard garden, as long as the energy supplies and the bridges hold up?
