Lies, Damned Lies, and Presidential Addresses

I get so tired of people who think it's just fine to toss the word "liar" into political speech. It's mildly funny when little kids say "liar, liar, pants on fire." It's less funny when adults do it. A lie is more than a misstatement. It is an intentional misstatement designed to mislead.

Whenever I hear someone saying "that's a lie" or "you're a liar" I want to grab that person and scrub his mouth out with soap. That was one of words that, a century ago, could get you killed the following dawn. It's still a word that, in parliamentary democracies, is proscribed. See here.

Congressman Joe Wilson called President Obama a liar during the speech. He was roundly condemned and apologized.

President Obama called "prominent politicians" liars as part of his speech. Perhaps he will also set a good example and apologize.
