...that [our bank] will send you an ATM card for a savings account whether you want one or not.

We set up a separate savings account, finally, as a holding pen for our tax money so that we don't slip up and spend it. One of the small joys of being self-employed is writing the IRS a check four times a year and knowing they'll get the interest on the money for the months before the taxes are actually due.

Earlier this week [our bank] sent me an ATM card. I assumed it was a new card to replace the existing checking account card, so I activated it, set a pin, etc. I set the old card aside, planning to cut it up this weekend.

Yesterday I tried to use the new card. Two ATMs spat it back at me. I was perplexed and spent the rest of the day putting small purchases on my American Express. Today Roy unraveled the mystery. If you select "checking account" when using an ATM card for your savings account you will get nowhere fast.

Whew -- good thing I hadn't cut up my real card. We cut up the savings account one, though. No rummaging in the tax money for us!

Tossed out without endorsement. The text makes it clear which side the author is on. I'd be interested to hear what others have to say about the data.

It's heartbreaking to listen to this Corvette engine go from a purr to a cough, to a gasp, to silence -- here is the "Cash for Clunkers" program in action:
