I am babysitting a plot in a neighborhood community garden while its owner is in France for a month, with her children, visiting her family.

There's not much to do. The plot has been beautifully tended. I have been urged to harvest any produce that comes ripe. Yesterday I noted some lettuce getting ready to bolt; I'll go back and pick some today. I also thinned some carrots and brought them home. They were surprisingly bitter and made my mouth tingle and then go numb. Very odd.

This is the community garden with the little pond. I looked but did not see any tadpoles, although I saw something in the murk that might have been toad's eggs, I suppose.

I also noted that rose campion had self-seeded through the garden with some profligacy. Rose campion is a biennial and I have not yet established any in my back yard for the "off" years, so I harvested several seedheads, brought them home and sprinkled them here and there.

There's a little bench in a secluded spot in the back of the garden. As Roy is out of town today I may just take a snack and a bottle of water and enjoy the garden space in the cool of the evening.
