Slow day around town

It's kind of a yucky day -- overcast, humid, good chance of rain. A good time to think about home and hearth.

For the first time in almost a decade, Roy feels comfortable skipping a weekend vacuuming of the house. It looks as clean to us right now as it used to a day or so after vacuuming. The difference a big dog makes.

I've been held up in my plans to start amaryllis seeds because I wasn't sure where to get some builders' sand. Last time I did this, I scooped up some from runoff at a local construction site. Today I learned there's a building supply place two blocks away. They laughed when I said I needed a cup of sand, and then told me to show up with my cup.

There's a community garden about three blocks away. No open spaces at the moment, but one of the organizers has offered me a corner of her plot, as well as limited planting rights for ornamentals in the borders. The corner of the large-ish (8" x 16" approx) plot will be fine for two tomato plants, a couple of basil and perhaps some parsley. I have four tomato plants remaining after planting two in pots in the backyard.

My five year old basil seeds are sprouting like mad. This is good. My parsley isn't doing anything -- seeds must be too old. I will try to buy plants today after making the sand run. A little riding around on the bike will be good, too.

It's a nice day for dividing a hosta and planting the divisions in the ground.

Boneless pork loin is on sale at the PathMark for $1.68/lb.
