When I read that the Bartram's Garden yellowwood was struck by lightning last week, I have to say I cried a little bit. The tree is thought to have been brought to William Bartram by Andre Michaux, and is thus a living link with two famous American (or in Michaux's case, French-working-in-America) botanists. Losing it would have been devastating to many people.
When I got to Bartram's Garden on Thursday, I was relieved to see that two major branches survive, and the staff expects significant regeneration to take place in the next ten to twenty years. If I take care of myself, I may live to see it.
