This afternoon, I made a reservation for our favorite table at the Union League. I showed up in person and talked to the maitre d' about special arrangements for a birthday foofawaw. When we got there, a cranky member said he was there first and he'd had many experiences being chased off tables that were rightfully his.
We moved to a less desirable table to avoid making a scene, but were disappointed.
The staff was more or less at fault -- they'd not put a "reserved" sign on the table, which had been occupied early, that this party had slipped in during the 30-second interval between the earlier folks vacating and the staff showing up with the "reserved" sign. The staff apologized and gave us a free dinner. We're still fairly annoyed at the squatters (from our point of view) who acknowledged that we were not at fault but still declined to vacate.
